Chief goddess of Punic Carthage from the 5th century BCE, consort of Baal Hammon, protector of the city, homes and families, of fertility and rain; worshipped across North Africa, Sicily, Malta and Gades and, after Carthage fell, as Juno🎨 Caelestis. The Greeks equated her with Athena🎨, the Egyptians with Neith🎨. "Tanit" is a modern vocalisation: Greek transcriptions give Tinnit.
