The Pyramid Texts

← all texts · Egyptian · c. 2400–2300 BCE (Old Kingdom)

What this is

The oldest body of religious writing in the world — funerary spells carved into the walls of Old Kingdom pyramids to carry the dead king up to the sky and the imperishable stars. The seed from which the Coffin Texts and Book of the Dead later grew.

Companion reading path

What to read alongside it, and why.

The Pyramid Texts are the ancestor of the Book of the Dead — read them in sequence to watch Egyptian afterlife belief evolve.
The Middle Kingdom bridge between the two: the same spells democratized from kings to nobles.
